Epitalon
Synthetic tetrapeptide promoted in longevity communities.
Editorial review: August 13, 2026Evidence snapshot
This drawer marks papers. It is not a plan, a dose, or a source. A paper is a bounded report. It is not a protocol. Grades name the object. They are not a safety rating.
Identity lock. Epitalon (also Epithalon, Epithalone, AEDG; Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic pineal-associated tetrapeptide. PubChem CID 219042; formula C14H22N4O9 / MW 390.35; prefer CAS 307297-39-8. PubChem also lists 64082-79-7 as a conflicting/secondary synonym on the same record — do not print it as a silent equal primary CAS. Epitalon ≠ Epithalamin extract. No approved indication. Off-label does not apply. Telomerase and “anti-aging” language in secondary sources is not a clinical claim. Mark cell-culture and rodent papers as what they are.
Bottom line
The PubMed set is dominated by Khavinson / Anisimov-line laboratory work: telomerase induction in human cell culture, rodent lifespan and carcinogenesis models, and peptide-identification papers. Controlled human clinical efficacy for aging, disease prevention, or telomere maintenance in people is not established in this set. Skeptical read: impressive cell and animal signals are not a human therapy grade. Do not glow in-vitro telomerase into anti-aging efficacy.
Papers
Human cells in culture (not a human clinical trial)
PMID 12937682 — Khavinson 2003
Tested: Epithalon addition to telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblast culture — telomerase catalytic subunit expression, enzymatic activity, and telomere elongation in vitro.
Does not show: a controlled trial in living people, or clinical anti-aging benefit.
PMID 40908429 — Al-Dulaimi 2025
Tested: Epitalon effects on telomere length in human cell lines via telomerase upregulation or ALT activity (in-vitro cell-line work).
Does not show: human clinical efficacy, or safety/efficacy of any consumer peptide product.
PMID 32019204 — Khavinson 2020
Tested: AEDG (Epitalon) effects on gene expression and protein synthesis during neurogenesis models; epigenetic-mechanism discussion.
Does not show: a human RCT for cognition or aging.
Identity / pineal-complex context
PMID 29124531 — Khavinson 2017
Tested: identification of peptide AEDG within a pineal polypeptide complex.
Does not show: clinical efficacy of synthetic Epitalon in people.
PMID 12374906 — Khavinson 2002
Tested: broad review-style discussion of peptides and ageing from that research tradition.
Does not show: a modern controlled human Epitalon trial.
Rodent lifespan / carcinogenesis / aging biomarkers
PMID 12459848 — Anisimov 2002
Tested: Epithalon on aging and breast adenocarcinoma development in transgenic HER-2/neu mice.
Does not show: a human cancer-prevention or longevity result.
PMID 14501183 — Anisimov 2003
Tested: Epitalon on aging biomarkers, lifespan, and spontaneous tumor incidence in female Swiss-derived SHR mice.
Does not show: human lifespan or tumor outcomes.
PMID 12049808 — Anisimov 2002
Tested: Epitalon on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine–induced colon carcinogenesis in rats.
Does not show: human colon-cancer prevention.
PMID 15909815 — Anisimov 2005
Tested: Epitalon and melatonin on lifespan and spontaneous carcinogenesis in senescence-accelerated mice (SAM).
Does not show: a human clinical result.
PMID 18856211 — Vinogradova 2007
Tested: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly peptide on lifespan and spontaneous tumors in female rats under different illumination regimes.
Does not show: human anti-aging efficacy.
Non-human primate / pineal peptide context (related object — tag carefully)
PMID 15664732 — Goncharova 2005
Tested: pineal peptides (epitalon described as synthetic analogue of epithalamin) on age-related endocrine disturbances of pineal and pancreatic function in rhesus monkeys.
Does not show: a human RCT, or that every pineal preparation equals synthetic AEDG.
Recent overview (secondary)
PMID 40141333 — Araj 2025
Tested: narrative overview of Epitalon biology and claimed properties.
Does not show: a new controlled human efficacy trial. Secondary synthesis of a thin clinical literature.
What is not established
Approved indication. Controlled human efficacy for aging, telomere maintenance in vivo, cancer prevention, cognition, or metabolic disease. Equivalence of Epitalon, Epithalamin, and other pineal extracts. Product identity for unlabeled AEDG vials. In-vitro telomerase induction is not a human anti-aging protocol and is not graded as one.
